The Beautifulest Christmas Tree Ever

We woke up this morning to this...

Yippee! I just love the snow! What a way to welcome December!!!

Last night, a branch had fallen out of our Cottonwood. So, our daughter, fresh off of our Christmas Tree hunt, decided that this fallen branch would work for a reenactment of our tree hunt. We dragged that branch all over our backyard, pretending that we were trekking through the Christmas Tree Farm. Then, she decided that the "Christmas Tree" needed to be decorated. We used bungee cords to attach the branch to our backyard bench. Then, she raided her outdoor toy box looking for anything that had a handle she could hang on the branches. The above picture is her finished product. I just love the big hippety-hop ball at the very top.

Here are some close-ups of her holiday work of art. I wonder what the neighbors are thinking!!!

When she was finished, she declared, "This is the Beautifulest Christmas Tree ever!" She was so proud of her backyard tree. I am proud of her creativity. I love to see her use her imagination so creatively!
On a different note, you may have noticed that I learned how to change the template of my blog to something other that what Blogger offers. I'm feelin' mighty festive here on my blog! I got the template from this site. It was super easy to do and free too. Gotta love that!

We started the rest of our Christmas countdown activities today. Along with lighting the Advent wreath, we are reading from The Advent book, a wonderfully illustrated book by Jack and Kathy Stockman. It mimics the advent calendars where you open a door each day to reveal a prize. Behind each of the 25 doors in the book, there is a picture and part of the Christmas story.

We're also removing links from a paper chain and then counting how many are left until Christmas.

The last two activities that we are doing nightly are ones that my daughter and I made together. My mom gave us a kit for a Christmas countdown calendar. We used all the supplies from the kit but we made our own design. We didn't like the original plan that came with the kit. I'm happy with how it turned out. Sometimes kits can be great because everything you need is right there.

Inside of each day's pocket is a piece of scrapbook paper. On it, I have (or soon will) write an activity to do for the night. Most of the activities will be things that we would be doing anyways. For instance, I am saving some of my Christmas decorating to put as an activity. One night, the kids will get to help put out the nativity. On another night, we'll decorate the tree. On another, we'll bring out the basket of Christmas books. I think that this will be an activity that we'll all enjoy. Hopefully, it will become a yearly tradition.
The last thing that we're doing each night is Christmas Countdown Blocks. I took two square blocks of wood and my daughter and I wrapped them in wrapping paper. Then we took green and red cards and put number stickers on them. Every night after counting how many links are left until Christmas, my daughter will have to find the digits that make up that number. This is a skill that she needs to work on anyways.

If you try this activity, there is a trick to it. Both blocks need the numbers 0, 1, and 2. This is necessary for making numbers like 22 or 10. Every number that you make will need at least one of these digits as you're counting down. The remaining numbers get divided between the two blocks. However, when I was doing it, I finished and had one number left off. I could not figure out what the problem was. I knew that I had seen these in the store, so I knew there was a way to do it. I scoured the Internet and finally figured it out. 9 and 6 are only one number... you just flip it upside down for the one you want. So, on one block we have 0, 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6(or 9). On the other, we have 0, 1, 2, 3, 7, and 8. That's the trick to figuring it out!

Advent

Today marks the first Sunday of Advent. We follow the tradition of Advent in our home. My parents celebrated it with me and my sibling since we were really small. I appreciate it so much more as an adult. In this day and age of Christmas being such a commercialized holiday, Advent is a beautiful celebration that redirects our attention on the meaning behind Christmas.

While searching online, I found a site called Following the Star. It is an online devotional for Advent. Each day's reading includes 5 parts:

  1. Presence of God
  2. The Word of God
  3. Devotion
  4. Conversation with God
  5. Benediction

Each section is really small so a huge amount of time does not need to be invested in it. I am going to try to follow this every day of Advent. It is not age-appropriate for my small children but for me, it will be a time of redirecting my focus so I don't get caught up in the hustle and bustle of December. (Yikes, I can't believe December starts tomorrow!)

Everything Glorious!

My hubby and I led worship today and we sang a song that we just learned. It's called Everything Glorious and it's by The David Crowder Band. It is a beautiful song with beautiful lyrics that remind us that even when we feel insufficient and insignificant, our Heavenly Father views us as beautiful because "He makes everything glorious."

Song lyrics | Everything Glorious lyrics

Here is a
link to an interview with David Crowder where he is discussing the song. It's an interesting link if you want to see what he looks like...definitely not your traditional worship leader look.

Great song. I'm glad I learned it!

Appreciation

We had a really busy weekend. It's kinda a mixed bag when we do. On one hand, we usually are doing things that we love or at least doing things with people we love. However, on the other hand, when the weekend is over, it's over, without any downtime to relax. Then, Monday rolls around and my hubby is off to work.

Sometimes I feel a little guilty that I get to stay home with the kiddos. He drives off to work everyday while I'm comfy cozy in my jammies. I love being a stay-at-home mom. But, I know that my hubby would love to be home with the kiddos all day too. And, if there ever was a great candidate to be a stay-at-home dad, my hubby would be the best.

On days like today when I feel sorry for my hubby as he treks off to work after a busy weekend, I try not to focus on feeling guilty. I try to focus on being grateful. It's really not hard at all to be grateful for the life that I have. I have a fabulous husband who works his butt off so that I can be home with the kids. He is my best friend whom I trust 100%. He makes me laugh, comforts me, and supports me in more ways than I could ever count. We have two great children. They bring such joy to my life. Everyday is a new adventure with the two of them. I look forward to the years that lie ahead for our little family. I am so grateful for the love that our family shares. Yes, I am indeed grateful.

Today, I looked up some scriptures to help me keep an attitude of gratitude. Here's a couple that I found...

Colossians 3:15:
Be ye thankful.

I Thessalonians 5:18:
"In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you."

Psalm 92: 1,2:
It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High:To show forth Thy loving kindness in the morning, and Thy faithfulness every night.

New Word

Today, as part of the sermon at church, I learned a new word...essene.

According to Dictionary.com, here is the definition:

Es·sene [es-een, e-seen]
–noun Judaism.
a member of a Palestinian sect, characterized by asceticism, celibacy, and joint holding of property, that flourished from the 2nd century b.c. to the 2nd century a.d.

Book Review: The Busy Mon's Guide to Bible Study

Today at church, the message was on studying the Bible. Not just reading it...studying it. The pastor made some very good points and the sermon reminded me a lot of a book that I have been reading. It was a gift for Christmas from a friend. It's called The Busy Mom's Guide to Bible Study by Lisa Whelchel. I have really enjoyed it. Her website describes the book as "1 Busy Mom, 15 Minutes a Day, A 3-Month Plan, 20 Days a Month, An Infinity of Blessings." I've learned a lot from this little book. Probably the most important thing that I have learned from it is that Bible Study doesn't need to be overcomplicated. I've often done just that and overcomplicated my study of the Bible and in the end, I feel very frustrated. I set up my study of the Bible within a time frame with a certain number of chapters to read looking for insight on a specific topic. Studying in this way has set me up to never accomplish what I set out to do and I end up feeling like a failure. Obviously, that isn't what I want to get out of my time studying the Bible.
I would definitely recommend this book. It is easy to understand and isn't too deep and doctrinal. It simply gives you the tools to dive into the scripture and study it. And, after you're done reading it, the book serves as a guide for 20 different tools for further study of the scripture.

I am an Irritable Mother!

OK, you know that irritable, grouchy feeling that you get when you feel like you are being pulled in every direction and if something doesn't give you are going to explode into a million screaming pieces? I feel that way sometimes. I feel that way more than I would like. There. I said it. But guess what? I'm not alone! You probably feel that way too. It's one of those secrets of motherhood that we don't like to talk about. We like to pretend that everything is just peachy and that everything is under control. The reality is that motherhood isn't always pretty. I question my decisions. I questions my abilities. I question...I question...I question...

Like I said, I'm not alone. At MOPS today, Karen Hossink was our guest speaker. She is the author of the book, Confessions of an Irritable Mother. She shared her struggles with us and discussed her journey through the obstacles of motherhood. During our small group discussion time after her presentation, her message resonated with each woman. It was refreshing to see women open up and share the fact that they face struggles as a mother. It's amazing how much we laughed as we realized that our struggles are universal. Karen Hossink has a website and blog. Both are well worth checking out.

I learned something else too. My small group provided the food for today's MOPS meeting. I made a potato casserole. I assembled it last night and baked it this morning...so simple. Looks like we'll be eatin' a lot of potato casserole around here. I think I'm addicted. I didn't take a picture of the potatoes but I did take a picture of the other dish I brought...Apples and Carmel Dip...Mmmm!

I learned today that if you have to make something for others, make something that you love and make extra. I did just that and yes, we'll be eating carmel apple dip all weekend lo-o-ong! My sweet tooth is going to go bonkers! YUM!

Palm Crosses

Today is Palm Sunday. Today at church, we received a palm branch to take home. The kids had fun playing with it...dancing, sweeping, reinacting the triumphant entry. On a fluke, I looked online to see if I could find any creative ideas for displaying the palm until Easter. (I had placed it in a vase and it just looked silly.) I found this link for palm crosses and I immediately tried it. What a great idea!!! She had only posted a tutorial for the one way to make a cross so I googled the other way and found this link.
Here's the end result...

I love origami and this is a beautiful extension of that love. It's just an organic form of origami!

2 Moms

Today I learned about a website called http://www.2moms.com/. I learned about it through a mentor mom at our church MOPS (Mothers Of PreSchoolers) group. There is a lot of really great information on the site...you can even purchase one of their tour buses. Heaven only knows why one would want to purchase a big purple bus!!! Anyways, the best thing is a calendar titled, Praying Daily for Your Children. It has a character trait, sample prayer, and a scripture for each day of the month. I taped mine to the inside of my bathroom mirror medicine cabinet. I figure I go in there at least twice a day to brush my teeth. That means twice a day I will be reminded to pray for my kiddos...beyond praying for boo-boos and meals. Today's prayer is for peace. "Father , let my children 'make every effort to do what leads to peace." The scripture is Romans 14:19. Quick yet meaningful...I like that!

Noah's Wife

My daughter received a Noah's Ark play set as a gift from a friend for Christmas. In addition to having two of all the animals, there are two people...Noah and his wife. While playing with it today, she held up the woman figure and asked what her name was. I was stumped. I looked in the Bible, I looked in the book Who's Who in the Bible, and I called my Dad who's a pastor. It's confirmed...Noah's wife doesn't have a recorded name! I didn't know that! So, I learned a very simple thing today...Noah's wife had no name.
