Show Me the Money!

On the news tonight, they did a special segment on the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. Amongst other responsibilities, they process money for the Seventh Federal Reserve District, which includes all of Iowa and most of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin. Here are some pretty interesting things that I learned from the news segment and copied from their site.
  • Checks processed - $1.5 trillion (2006)
  • Counterfeit notes found per day - 50 to 60 (2007)
  • Currency received and counted - $56.6 billion (2006)
  • Unfit currency destroyed - $5.9 billion (2006)

They also have a museum in Chicago that is free and open to the public. You can do guided tours or tour the museum on your own. What a great field trip for the kids when they are learning about money!
